QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Can single parents adopt?
Yes and no. We welcome single parents, and many are now
successfully adopting through our programs. However, we follow
the guidelines established by the foreign countries, some of
which do not allow singles to adopt.
Is there an age limitation in adoption?
Yes and no. We follow the rules of the foreign countries, but
there is often flexibility in interpreting age requirements.
Are there healthy children of all races available for
adoption?
Our placing programs in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia
work with orphaned, abandoned or relinquished children of many
ethnicities including Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian and other minorities
within these countries. Families should be prepared for malnutrition
issues, developmental delays or other medical issues associated
with children who come from deprived backgrounds. Still, most
of these children are considered healthy by orphanage standards
and are expected to do well once they are placed in loving homes
and receive appropriate stimulation and nutrition.
What about age and gender?
We locate and refer children of all ages. If you are hoping for
an "infant" you should expect that the average age
of infants in international adoption is 6-12 months, depending
on the country. In addition, with the exception of China, the
wait for a referral of a girl is generally longer than that for
a boy. We request that applicants be as open as possible to adopting
a child of either gender, however, we do generally accommodate
requests for a gender preference.
